365 Days of The Simpsons

Firstly, if you have no idea what I’m talking about… I have a blog about The Simpsons. A long, long time ago in a living room far, far away, I decided to take a month off work and watch The Simpsons for about 8 hours a day until I’d finished the series. Unsurprisingly,  that idea was shelved. In November of 2012, I wrote an essay about the show for uni (technically, the essay was comparing The Monkees with The Simpsons as television’s reaction to youth culture in the 1960s and 1990s) and the idea was again sparked to watch the show, but in a slightly more practical format.

Thus, Simpsons A Day was born. It’s a simple concept: watch one episode of The Simpsons every day and blog my thoughts about it.

Why aren’t I up to episode #365?
For those watching closely, you’ll notice I’m only up to #354. I lost a few days when I had no internet connection, and lost almost a week when I was in Perth for work in late September because I was too exhausted to do anything. I’ve never claimed it was a perfect system and life has a habit of getting in the way. Sue me :p

What I’ve learned from The Simpsons in the past year
It’s my belief that The Simpsons jumped the shark in season 9, with ‘The Principal and the Pauper‘. It’s hard to pinpoint why this is the ep where it all started to go downhill. The writers hadn’t changed (maybe that was the problem, the show needed fresh blood?) but the plot was so ridiculous that there’s no way you can recover from it. It’s like the writers gave up- they’ve had one bad idea and threw everything else to hell.

There are still some gems to be found, and season 14 was pretty good as a whole. There are episodes so bad that I want to poke my eyes out, but yet I force myself to sit through all of them because it’s a commitment that I’ve made to watch all episodes and then write about it before poking my eyes out.

When will it end?
There are currently 540 episodes as they are now part way through season 25. By the time I get to 540 sometime in July, season 25 will be over so there will be more than 540. At this rate it will be September by the time I’ve caught up, but season 26 will start late October or early November. So, to answer the question, it will end when the series is finally cancelled. Of course, at the end of season 25, I won’t be watching the show every day and season 26 will start with Simpsons A Week. Geddit?
